Men’s Crochet Hat Pattern: A Basic

mens crochet hat pattern

Whipped this bad boy up this weekend because I wanted a basic men’s hat pattern. You know, for those projects where you want a neutral base. A few years ago, I made this men’s hat and wanted to create something that was sized a bit larger and without the textured band.

Finished hat will fit an adult male: 21.5 inches wide by 7.75 inches tall.

Men’s Crochet Hat Pattern

Materials:

  • 120 yards worsted weight yarn. I used Vanna’s Choice in tan
  • Size H (5.0mm) crochet hook

**Important: Check gauge and either use thicker yarn or a larger crochet hook. After Round 2, hat should measure 3 inches in diameter**

Chain 3, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first DC). Work 14 more DC into ring (15 DC). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 2: Ch 2, DC into same stitch. 2 DC into each stitch around (30 stitches). Measure gauge. Hat should measure 3 inches. Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 DC into second stitch. Continue pattern of *1 DC, 2 DC* around (45 stitches). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 4: Ch 2, 1 DC into each of next 3 stitches. 2 DC into fifth stitch. Continue pattern of *1 DC into next 5 stitches, 2 DC into next stitch* around (54 stitches). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 5: Ch 2, 1 DC into each stitch around (54 stitches). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 6: Ch 2, 1 DC into each of next 4 stitches. 2 DC into next stitch. Continue pattern of *1 DC into next 5 stitches, 2 DC into next stitch* around (63 stitches). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Note: if your hat is too small or you’d like to make a larger size, repeat Round 6 again, increasing by 2 DC every 6 to 7 DC until your hat measures the right size.

Rounds 7 – 13: Ch 2, 1 DC into each stitch around (63 stitches). Join with sl st, do not turn.

Round 14: SC into each stitch. (63 stitches). Join with sl st. Fasten off. Weave in end.

Hi, in Round 6 you say, “2 DC into fifth stitch”. This is after I dc in 8 stitches. Id’s this an error? Is it dc in 8 stitches and 2 dc in next?

Hi, Kandi – Yes, the pattern should read “DC into next stitch. Thanks for catching the typo-I’ve corrected in the post!

    Hey JJ
In round 6 the pattern should read 5 dc then 2 dc. I have redone the round several times. Please double check me. Thanks

Is this US DC or UK DC? Sorry, new to crocheting.

Do you do a slip stitch at the beginning of every round?

Yes, you do! Thank you for the note. I’ve added that you slip stitch to join every round.

Thanks for the note! It is US DC.

Hi there! I just discovered your pattern and I’m loving it! But round 6 you have a total of 63 stitches and I’m coming up with 60. Am I doing something wrong?

I counted 5 stitches with 2 in the 6th and had 63 stitches when ready to join and start round 7. Doing 8 then 2 in the next stitch ended with 60 total stitches for round 6. I like this pattern because it doesn’t take long to make. 🙂 I hope to see more hat patterns for both men and women in the future. 🙂

Hi, I am not getting 63 stitches at the end of round 6. I have redone this row several times not sure what I’m missing. Thanks

Hi – Actually the pattern was off. Instead of working 2 DC every 8 stitch, it’s 2 DC every 7 stitches. I’ve updated and verified that should get you to the 63 stitches. Let me know if that works!

In round 1 it says “Work Ch 2 at the beginning of every round in place of first DC”. So in round 3 does that mean you do ch 2 and then (since you say to start each round with 2 chain stitches to replace the first double crochet) go straight to the 2 double crochet in stitch 2, skipping over the first stitch?

this may be too old/late, but if you want to increase from 54 stitches to 63 stitches in round 6, I believe you have to 2 DC in every 6th stitch, so it is *1 DC in each stitch for 5 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*; that way you have (54/6 = 9) therefore 54+9=63. Just hoping this helps anyone working on this pattern in the future. Thank you for sharing this hat 🙂

This beanie hat came out really nice. I used a bulky weight yarn and it worked up fast with a few less rows. I am very happy with it.

Sorry better late then never. I believe the start of every round as Michelle B stated above we do a chain 2 and that counts as the first dbl crochet stitch. So if it says 2 dbl for the first st then you already have 1 dbl cr made with the chain 2 and the 2nd dbl cr sy is in the same st as the chain was made.!

My fiancé has a really big head. I need to measure him with measuring tape. Should I do more of rows 7-13 if his head is bigger than 21 inches? How can I customize it?

Very good, please be more specific, on whether to crochet,DC in the first st as the slip stitch, very hard to figure out. I had try a dozen times.

I like this pattern, I do have issues with the first chain 3 acts like a dc, as some rows say 1 dc then 2 dc, but does the chain 3 count? So do I do chain 3 and 1 dc in the first stitch and 2 dc in the second, then 1 dc in the third stitch, 2 dc in the fourth stitch?

I made 2 hats and I kept coming up with the same issue. Then situations of having 60 stitches when I’m supposed to have 63. I forced the increases in to get to the stitch count.

I wish there was more clarity about the first stitch and second stitch. First stitch should only be the chain 3 or should it include a dc, does the dc in the next 5 stitches count the first stitch with the chain 3 or not.

Also this keeps coming short at least short on my head. I kept doing 14 rows of DC to get past my ears, and as I like having a flap, I did 2 or 3 more rows of DC to get to that length and I also decreased in those rows to make it more of a snug fit. Then I did the last row of sc.

I am not a beginning crocheter. I’ve started this twice and neither time does it look anything like the cap in your photo. It seems like there are corrections not updated, or other directions that are maybe not included.

My issues… there is too many stitches that make the cap “lumpy” prior to the multiple rows of Dc. I don’t think this is going to be a wearable cap as is.

There’s still a typo in round 6. Still shown as DC in 7 stitches, 2 DC in next. Should be DC in 5 stitches and 2 DC in next.

Rnd 6 still reads incorrectly should be dc in next 6, 2dc next stitch.

How would I adjust this pattern to be 25″ around?

  • JJCrochet

    January 27, 2025

Hi Jodi – if you need this pattern to be larger, I would add another round of increases for Rounds 7 or 8 until it’s the right size. Perhaps try to increase 2 DC every 9 or so stitches and see if that gives you the right sizing.

  • JJCrochet

    January 27, 2025

Hi Emily – yes! If you need to make a larger hat, I would continue to do increases in Rounds 7 and 8 to see if that gives you the right size.
