Hi friends! I haven’t posted a free crochet hat pattern in a while, so I thought it’s high time I share one. I woke up this Saturday morning at 7:40am and got started with my day (translation: reading, French vanilla latte, crocheting). Don’t you just love Saturdays?
This hat was designed for a guy, but could easily be adapted for a girl. The ribbing on the bottom might be a tad masculine, but if it’s your style – go for it! Teaser: This hat pattern would be the perfect compliment to JJCrochet’s first guest post, so keep it in your back pocket.
Materials
Size H (8/5.00mm) Crochet Hook
100 yards Worsted Weight Yarn (I used basic Red Heart Super Saver)
Special Stitches
FPDC (Front Post Double Crochet): Yarn over, insert hook from right to left behind post of stitch from previous round. Yarn over, pull loop from behind post (3 loops remain on hook). Yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Pictures always help (click to enlarge):
Step 5: Yarn over, pull through one loop.
FPSC (Front Post Single Crochet): Worked the same as FPDC, but no yarn over at beginning. Insert hook from right to left behind post of previous round. Yarn over, pull loop from behind post (2 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Gauge
First 3 Rows in Pattern = 4 Inches in Diameter. To ensure a perfect fit, take time to check your gauge and adjust hook size if necessary.
Men’s Ribbed Crochet Hat Directions
Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form ring.
Round 1: CH 2 (counts as first DC, now and throughout). 12 more DC into ring (13 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Round 2: 2 DC into each stitch around (26 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Round 3: *2 DC into next stitch, 1 DC in next stitch,* Repeat around (38 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Round 4: *2 DC into next stitch, 1 DC in next 2 stitches,* Repeat around (50 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Round 5: * 2 DC into next stitch, 1 DC in next 6 stitches,* Repeat around (55 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST. Note: You might get 56 stitches, but that’s alright! It won’t affect the overall size of your hat and it will still turn out just fine. If you do end up with 56 stitches in Round 5, it’s recommended you make 57 stitches total so you have an odd number to work the edging across.
Rounds 6 – 10: 1 DC into each stitch around (55 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Rounds 11 – 13: Ch 2, *FPDC into next stitch, DC in next stitch,* Repeat around (55 sts). Join to top of ch-2 with a SL ST.
Round 14: Ch 1 (counts as first SC), *FPSC into next stitch, SC into next stitch,* Repeat around *(55 sts). Join to top of ch-1 with a SL ST.
Fasten Off.

November 19, 2012This is a great pattern! Thanks so much for sharing it. I linked to it on my blog this morning for a gift roundup: http://www.mooglyblog.com/one-skein-crochet-gifts-for-men/

November 19, 2012Hi, loving the pattern. Everything is fine up until round 5. I keep getting 56 instead of 55. I even get 50 in the round before and every number correct before that. I’m not really sure what I’m doing wrong or if I keep counting wrong. (I swear I’ve counted just about 20 times >_<)
But yeah I really like how the beanie looks and I've learned a new stitch so that's a plus. Thanks again 🙂

November 24, 2012I am really enjoying this hat pattern I am making it for myself and will add a button to made it look more girlish. I had a slight problem with the instructions but because of the blog I was able to figure it out. I will make them in different colors and wear them for myself.

November 25, 2012Not the most advanced crocheted, andim having trouble with the FPDC. I guess I don’t understand what the “post” is? Can you help?

November 26, 2012Oh my…. I just finished this hat. It started out pretty easy for me but then each row got more stitches than required.Oh well. It fits my head just fine so no worries there.I don’t really like a tight hat. I absolutely couldnnot.make the last few rows work at all. I tried but did not see the ribbed pattern show up at all. Still no worries because it looks fine as it turned out. Thank you so much for the pattern. Think I will make it again for my 3boys.

December 5, 2012Hi! I have a question. On the “ribbing”, do you do a fpdc on the vertical part of the wtitch, then a dc on the horizontal part of the stitch right next to where you did the fpdc? That seems like 2 stitches per stitch of the previous row and I’m going to run out of yarn! Please email me when you get a chance – this is driving me crazy! 🙂

December 19, 2012Ok, so for some reason, I absolutely CANNOT even start the hat! I join in the round, and then from there I just can’t get it. Lol I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Lol

December 21, 2012So, correct me if I’m wrong but 55 stitches messes up the ribbed edging, you end up with two non-fpdc beside each other at the end of the round. A bit frustrated, took me over an hour and frogging it 3 times to figure out (and like I said correct me if I’m wrong) that it’s the pattern and not me.
I just found you and I love your blog, hoping you can help.

December 22, 2012I just made up most of it randomly, and it turned out really good.

December 26, 2012Hi! Thanks for the pattern! I made the bigger hat for my significant other, Joe, and it turned out great. I found the pattern pretty easy- I had to redo some parts and carefully count stitches, but eventually I got it right. It really fit me nicely- I think I like it better on me because my head is smaller, but Joe says it is good for him because it fits more tightly than a normal hat and won’t fall off when he is doing manly things like splitting wood. 🙂 I’ll make one for myself. It takes a couple of hours (I think) and uses a small amount of yarn. Thanks again!

December 30, 2012I am a little confused when I get to round 5 up until then I am able to get the same amount of stitches that you have listed but when I do round 5 I get 57 and when I go to round 6 then I end up getting 64. I have redone this multiple times and cannot figure out how to get the right amount for either of those two rounds.

January 13, 2013This pattern really makes no sense at all to me, it seems more suited to a child than an adult.

February 15, 2013Lovely pattern, have made one for my brother in law and am making more to raise money for local homeless people.
Thanks so much for the pattern, it works out perfectly for me!

March 6, 2013I had a lot of trouble with this pattern. The stich counts do not add up correctly. I worked around it and my hat turned out fine, but a few revisions might be good. I like the rows from the post stiches, nice touch!

August 6, 2013PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE COLOR OF THIS YARN IS! I sure hope you remember…I’m doing a project with this exact same yarn color but I don’t remember what it’s called and I’m trying to find it online because I need more.
JJCrochet
August 11, 2013Not sure of the color, Raquel, but I know it was some basic Red Heart yarn. Hope you find out what it is!

September 14, 2013This is my first attempt at a hat & I had a great time making it 🙂

September 17, 2013Thanks for the pattern. I made the large size but,
is too small for my husband.
I crochet too tight. Other wise I love the pattern.
My plan is to use size I and increase rows before doing
the ribbing. My husband and boys like beanie
to cover ears.

September 22, 2013Have made several hats in an almost identical pattern & couldn’t find a pattern that starts at the top rather then the bottom/cuff. So glad I ran into yours because I’m crocheting hats for our troops & this looks like the perfect solution.
I suggest for those having trouble with the FPDC & BPDC to go to a tutorial on tweet or Yahoo. Good luck!

September 26, 2013It looks like the color is Coral. I am making a blanket in this color.

October 6, 2013Hello, my husband’s noggin is pretty large. What can I do to make this hat bigger? Ty

October 26, 2013I made the hat last night and it turned out beautifully. Next time I’ll use an I hook. I had to increase to 63 stitches to make it large enough and it’s still a tad snug. Thanks so much for sharing your pattern 🙂

November 2, 2013On the ribbed edges are you doing fpdc and then bpdc? Because I tried what you had written and it was creating too many stitches and looked wrong.

December 23, 2013How did I miss this pattern? My husband will love this one when we shovel snow.

December 29, 2013I’ve been sick and decided to pick up a little crocheting to pass the time. I haven’t crocheted since I was a kid. This was so easy and it turned out great!!!! Thanks for sharing the pattern and giving great instructions.

January 1, 2014Thanks for this pattern, it is easy and I am making several to give to the homeless

January 7, 2014Thank you for this pattern! The ribbing is a great and easy way to add interest to a simple beanie. My question is about your stitch counting. On the third row, you have a stitch count of 38, which I’m not sure how you can arrive at…shouldn’t it be 39? Anyway, thank you!
JJCrochet
January 9, 2014What a great idea, Linda – thanks for sharing. I’m sure they’ll be blessed by your handmade hats.

March 25, 2014I made this hat and it fits me but not my husband, too small.

June 27, 2014On Round 3, it says I will have 38 stitches, but if I follow the pattern I will end up with 39 stitches. Am I supposed to not do the last DC? If anyone knows it will help. Thanks

October 4, 2014thanks for the pattern. was my first cap. I used a G hook and it turned out baby size lol.. but i love it and will give it to a friends baby=) will try larger hooks
Heidi
October 20, 2014I started with 13 DC in ring.. increased 13 in Row2.. and another 13 in Row 3 (total 39 stitches) Row 4 = 13 more (52). Row 5 only adds half as many .. 52 divided by 8 (number of stitches in repeat) = 6 1/2.. I have added 7 stitches and crocheted 3 additional DC to meet the end of the row (59). My crown circle = 6 inches diameter at this point. (when making circles, I make 2x in r2, 1-2x in r3, 1-2x-1 in row 4, .. (3-2x-3 in r5) to avoid points at increases)

November 30, 2014i can’t get my ribbed rows figured out? After I start the 2nd row of ribs, I do the 1st FPDC over the one from the previous row. But now I can’t tell where to do my DC? Can you possibly send a diagram labeling this? Also, I’m assuming it’s not necessary to turn my work, is that correct? Thanks for any help you can give.

December 3, 2014Hi, I’m following your pattern exactly but on my fpdc rows 11&12 are flaring out and my hat isn’t quite round anymore. Any ideas as to why?? Love the pattern by the way! Your directions are awesome!

January 4, 2015Just finished this hat yesterday. Only took a couple nights of working to complete it, very easy pattern and I love the ribbing! I had to increase the stitch count to 63 and also added rows. I ended up with 14 rows and then 3 rows for the ribbing. Skipped the last FPSC row because I like how it looked as it was. My husband likes it a lot, it fits snug but not too tight. I used Patons wool and he said its incredibly warm and also waterproof so its the perfect winter hat. Thanks!!

January 15, 2015Love this pattern. Started one last night and am almost finished. I did extend my ribbing down a few rows longer, but it’s a perfect fit for my grandson. He loves it! Thanks for sharing.

February 2, 2015Hi, i tried your pattern but it seems this pattern is for children. I tried on my husband head and it is too small. Any way to make it bigger? Thx
Sarah
February 5, 2015Hi Iam making the hat for my husband and children ,but i dont understand round 4. I need your help Anyone knows please help.It is a beutiful pattern. I either had more or less stitchs. What does that mean 1 dc on the next 2 stitch. It is my first hat. Thank you , Sarah. M.
JJCrochet
February 7, 2015Hi Sarah – When it says to work “1 DC in the next two stitches” it just means to work 1 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the stitch after that. Hope that helps.
JJCrochet
February 7, 2015You’re very welcome 🙂

September 21, 2015I plan on making this hat for a dear friend. The problem is that he has a very large head and most hats don’t fit him. How can I modify this pattern to fit a larger head?

October 14, 2015I just found this pattern. Looks great but this is your first time working with a fpdc
Looks like a few people got stuck with the stitch count adding up? Any feedback or advice?

January 18, 2016Would it look ok to crochet rows 11-14 in another color? I want to crochet OSU gray and red. Can I put a pom Pom on top?
JJCrochet
February 3, 2016Sure, that sounds like a nice color combo for an OSU hat. The pom-pom sounds cute, too!

October 21, 2020This is basically my go to when someone requests a hat from me. Thanks for the pattern! I don’t sell, I just make them for friends when the season comes along and they need a new one or their kids have outgrown theirs.

November 25, 2020So glad you’re enjoying them, Jennifer! With the cooler weather coming, I’ve found myself more in hat-making mode. 🙂

December 5, 2020I’m not new to crochet, but I used several different sizes of hooks and this always comes out too small for an adult. The upside is that it is a very easy pattern to follow.
