The Jenny Lee – New Crochet Hat Pattern

My mom periodically (no pun intended) gives me pictures of crocheted items from magazines, “Just for inspiration,” she claims.  This time, she was onto something.  That something became the basis for JJCrochet’s newest hat pattern: the Jenny Lee.

The magazine clipping my mom gave me was a Macy’s ad that featured this crocheted hat by Fossil:  Cute, right?  I liked the hat’s textured detail, button, and flower – what’s not to like?

Over Christmas break, I decided to experiment.  I got out the crochet hook and after much squinting at the tiny magazine pic, I came up with the perfect pattern.  And I’m not just saying that because I wrote it.  It’s quite addicting.  The mathematical element works out evenly which causes the hat to fit perfectly.  I especially like this crocheted hat because it doesn’t look like your typical double crochet; the puff stitch adds something a little special, don’t you think?

I named this Jenny Lee crochet hat pattern after one of my current college roommates who is sweet and subtle and everything fashionable, just like this hat.

You can purchase this PDF crochet hat pattern for $5 in my Etsy Store or instantly download it from Ravelry.  As a special intro, I’m giving away two copies of the crochet pattern via random drawing (woo woo!). To enter the Jenny Lee crochet hat pattern giveaway, leave a comment on this post and let me know what you think about this new pattern. On January 24th, I’ll randomly select two winners.  Happy Free Pattern Giveaway!

I think this hat is super cute! I love the button detail on the flower and the trim and the puff stitch is a nice touch. I recently learned how to do it and I love the added depth it can create. Excellent job!

    Jenny,

I love this hat!!!! It is so awesome and even though it does look kind of like a shell but has a little bit of a look of a cluster stitch? I didn’t know you had this contest goin on? I am disabled and sell what I make at a local Farmer’s Market that has gone indoors year round now and I want to get ready to pay for a space and have some nice things to sell there like this hat!! I am disabled and barely make ends meet so I was wondering if you could be generous enough to consider giving me this pattern? I don’t mean to say that you aren’t generous because you have some very nice free patterns already listed and that is so very sweet of you!! I so appreciate this site of yours!! Don’t worry if you cannot give me this pattern. I will still consider you a generous crocheter!!! Love this pattern! Way to go!!

Hey! Its great to see there are so many people who enjoy crocheting as much as I do. I guess you would say that I’m a quick learning rookie as I just Youtube how to do certain stitches and go from there. There is one stitch in particular that I cant figure out how to do because I cant find a video on it, or the name of it. I believe you called it the puff stitch but when I search that its not what i’m looking for. it is the stitch on the yellow hat with the brown flower (which is quite beautiful – I just got into hats today!). Do you know what exactly that stitch is called or where I can find a quick tutorial on it? Many thanks for any help you can provide!!

Hi Amanda! I’m glad you like the Jenny Lee hat – it really is one of my favorites to crochet. One of the things I like about it is the “puff” stitch that you mentioned which gives that hat its unique textured look. I’ve seen variations of the stitch a few other places, but I essentially made it up to created the desired look for this hat. I’ll e-mail you and give you more instructions about the stitch! 🙂 Glad you like it.

I was ready to enter and then saw that this wasn’t for this year. I love it, and you’re very talented. I was gonna say you should have named it “Buttons.” On the picture where it is on the mannequin, the hat looks like it is covered in buttons!
